One day, I was in the sunroom of my house and saw an Aphaenogaster queen in a seemingly vacant spiderweb. I decided to pull her out, as she looked like she had not been bitten. I then used a damp paper towel to remove any silk from her body, and prepared a test tube for her. After completing those tasks, I moved her into her new home. Today, I was thinking about which ants to write about and took a random peek into this queen’s nest. To my complete surprise, she had brood! This brood consists of three eggs, but she might lay more over the next few weeks.

My other Aphaenogaster queen has been doing a lot better, with quite a few eggs in her nest. She has a much smoother history, so hopefully, she will be easier to care for. I found her on my trampoline, which made her very easy to catch. I am very interested in this species of ant because they are the first queens of this species that I have collected. See you all next week!
