Fairly recently, I observed a Lasius neoniger nuptial flight – except the alates didn’t fly. For some reason, they kept popping up, maybe wandering around for a short time, then disappear back into the nest. This pattern repeated itself several times until the alates and workers eventually vanished from sight underground.

Upon starting my photo review, I spotted a photo of a queen who was curiously gazing around the nest.

This queen is positioned at a convenient angle because it reveals the full body length of these queens, which is eight milimeters.

In the image directly above I noticed that a queen was communicating with a worker, and found that funny. It is as if the worker is saying”Hello there queen alate” and the queen replying, “Hello to you too”.

While reviewing the photos, I noticed a hilarious image of three male alates.

I also spotted this duo of queens looking in the same direction and found it funny that they were doing that.
