Take 2, Day 42 – No wings on the pupae!

Here is Onetenna and some of her brood

When I checked Scar Smile and Onetenna on day 42, I noticed that Onetenna had no pupae, but she is feeding her larvae. The way to tell if she has fed them is the darker stuff inside the larvae. That is the food that Onetenna has been giving them.

Scar smile on the other hand, has some pupae that did not spin cocoons. This could be because they felt it was safe enough to skip the cocoon spinning stage, or they did not have scaffolding to spin cocoons. The pupae spin cocoons to protect themselves from disease, and predatory insects, like other ants.

I noticed that on Scar Smile’s lazy pupae (the ones that did not spin cocoons), there were no wings, which is good. Males and alate queens usually have wings to fly.
