Solenopsis fungal problems

by NJ Ant FanPosted on July 30, 2023July 30, 2023
Two Solenopsis molesta queen ants, one with a dark gaster indicating a fungal infection
Two Solenopsis queens. One has a black gaster, while the other has a yellow/orange gaster.

In early July, I caught several Solenopsis queen ants. Typically, these ants only fly in August, so seeing them in July is unusual. roughly a week after catching them, I noticed that the gaster of one of the ants had turned black. the only information I could find about this was on this Formiculture post, indicating that the cause of the color change was some type of fungus.
