Lasius brevicornis queens

Lasius brevicornis queen ants in a test tube nest.
Three Lasius brevicornis queens in their nest.

During mid to late August, I caught 8 Lasius brevicornis queens. These queens resemble Lasius neoniger queens, but brevicornis queens have reddish heads, instead of the brown found on neonigers. Brevicornis also have orange workers, unlike Neoniger’s brown workers. Brevvies are also polygynous, so they can have multiple queens per nest.

Despite the fact that I’ve had these brevicornis for over a month, they still haven’t laid eggs. My guess is that they will lay eggs in Spring, but I have no idea what their egg-laying patterns are, so I’ll just see what happens.
