I haven’t provided an update on this colony for some time, but they are doing very well. There are now seventeen nanitics (one is out of frame) along with some brood and a healthy queen. This colony has been very easy to care for, and they’re rather docile ants. During a writing assignment on this species, I learned that they have a bizarre method of laying pheromone trails. Their gaster tips are pointed upward, rendering the normal method of laying trails impossible for this species. Therefore, they adopt an injured run, dragging their rear legs, which contain scent glands that produce the trail chemicals. I will be sure to document this behavior if and when I see a worker laying a trail.
