Ghost ant queens in Phuket, Thailand

by NJ Ant FanPosted on February 27, 2023February 27, 2023
A better view of one of the queens. For reference, each worker is 1.5 millimeters.

In December 2022, I was lucky enough to travel to Thailand, Singapore, and Australia. On the first day, Mom and I went for an ant walk and found dozens of species. One of those species was the ubiquitous Ghost ant (Tapinoma melanocephalum).

While I had seen workers before, I hadn’t yet caught a glimpse of a queen. Crossing a bridge, I noticed an extensive trail of ghost ant workers moving to a new nest. After taking some photos, I moved on to find other ants. However, when I returned 20 minutes later, I spotted a queen among the workers. Upon seeing this, I immediately resumed photographing the trail of ants. Despite being only 2.5 millimeters, the queens were frustratingly fast, making it incredibly hard to obtain clear images of them.

I tried to take a clear photo by moving the camera with the ants, but it was incredibly blurry. This was mainly due to how fast the ants were moving.
